Welcome to little critics - kids share what they think

Welcome

Most children’s books are discussed and reviewed by adults. Adults decide which stories are important, which ones are age-appropriate, and what kids are supposed to get out of them. But reading doesn’t always work that way for kids.

Little Critics makes space for a kid's perspective on children’s stories.

At the center of this project is an 11-year-old who has been reading for as long as he can remember. He’s the kid who shows up at book sales with a very large cart (sometimes two). Reading makes him happy, and he has a habit of commenting on what he notices as he reads.

As he puts it: “I don’t try to judge books from the outside. I just tell you what it feels like to read them.”

Little Critics began after he reviewed a children’s book a parent was working on. That conversation led to more conversations  about what worked, what didn’t, where the story slowed down, and how it might feel clearer or more engaging to a young reader. With parental support and oversight, that everyday practice slowly grew into this project.

Today, Little Critics brings a child’s perspective into the conversation in a few different ways.
